Pecan Island
As you travel to Pecan Island by way of Vermilion's scenic LA 82, you'll enjoy this portion of the Jean Lafitte By-Way that winds its way through marshland inhabited by alligator, deer, nutria, native birds and other waterfowl. Knarled and leaning, moss draped oaks along this region stand testament to the winds of hurricanes that have blown across the land for centuries. Don't hesitate to stop at the roadside piers for a little fishing, crabbing or just to inhale and exhilarate at the beauty of the open marsh and its elusive inhabitants. Although very rural in nature, gas, food and a postal service can be found farther along on the "back ridge" as this portion of LA 82 is known. This entire area, well known for its hunting and fishing, is home to many privately owned camps that sport unusual names, such as Woo Woo's, Southern Leisure, Fin Fur & Feather, Da-T Camp and Pop A Top. You'll find the Crawfish Haven RV Park and the Coastal Bar. Open weekends all year long, it really comes to life during hunting season. There's also a Texaco station with a well supplied grocery store, gas, butane refills (if they can find Billy) and a little restaurant, called Billy's Kitchen, inside. They sell live blue crabs out back if you're inclined to throw a "boil" in the evening. Pecan Island also offers a public library, a chapel and West End Grocery to fill up with gas, or grab a good hot link po-boy for the road if your in a hurry. You may also spot the Indian mound (marked with a large trampline sideways). This end of Vermilion provides the boater with an entry to the Gulf of Mexico at Rollover Landing. The locals may still refer to it as Sostene's so don't be confused. Rules for entry are posted for watercraft since the waterway borders the Rockefeller Refuge, open March 1 to December 1. Also there is often 1 of 2 troopers lurking underneath an oak tree. The other is usually between Grand Chenier and Oak Grove.
